Updates from the South Baltimore Neigborhood
Here are some of the topics covered at September’s South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) meeting:
2 East Wells Updates
Jon Mayers, president of Chesapeake Realty Partners, provided updates on the new 2 East Wells development. They have presented initial ideas to Baltimore City, which was well received, and are enrolled in the Maryland Voluntary Cleanup Program. They are hoping to present drawings at the next SBNA meeting for approval.
Mayers announced that an alley, wide enough for cars, would be created for the eastern half of the unit block of E. Barney which should allow the creation of parking pads. The homes currently have a very small alley that backs up to a cinder block wall. An additional 10 feet of alley space will also be created for the homes on the 1800 block of Charles St. facing the development.
After meeting many of the neighbors of 2 East Wells in August, concerns were issued about the physical vibrations of a large development after issues with vibrations from the construction of 1901 South Charles. Mayers assured they would be working with engineers to prevent this problem with 2 East Wells.
Chesapeake Craft Brewers Update
Hoping to open a brewery and pub at the Pabst Castle at the corner of Charles St. and Wells St., Chesapeake Craft Brewers is currently behind projections and are looking at a 2013 opening. A local committee working with the ownership group gave the following updates after a questionnaire: The pub will serve lunch and dinner including a wide variety of foods and beers outside of what is brewed on the premises. They will also have an outdoor patio and perform improved landscaping on the property. They are pursuing a Restaurant B License which means half of their income must be from food, as well as a license for brewing, however they have yet to apply for either.
Officer Kevin “Butterbean” Vaught provided an update on the recent string of armed robberies in the area. Two individuals were arrested in connection with all 12 robberies that occurred in the area.
The individuals were caught on the night of the Ravens/Jaguars game after performing another robbery near Ridgely’s Delight. After waiting for them at a local gas station where they used stolen credit cards after previous robberies, the Southern District Police were able to locate and arrest the individuals. They are being charged with 12 robberies and are described as “not from the area.” Officer Butterbean said that many units of Southern District Police were working overtime to catch these individuals.
In other police news, another robbery occurred on Hamburg St. and three males were arrested immediately after by patrol in the immediate area.
