Port Covington is one of the biggest hot button issues in South Baltimore. And, it gets an incredible response every time SouthBMore.com provides any news about the waterfront property.
With news breaking yesterday that the large and ailing shopping center has been sold, SouthBMore.com wants to know what most South Baltimore residents would like to see happen at the prime, waterfront property on the South Peninsula.
What would you most prefer?
Finish the shopping center: Continue with the theme of ‘big box’ stores. Keep the Walmart, bring back another wholesaler, and bring in businesses like Home Depot and Office Depot.
A more upscale shopping center: Keep the shopping center theme, but add smaller stores, similar to those at The Shops at Canton Crossing or The Avenue at White Marsh.
Mixed use with shopping, offices and residential: Design a truly mixed development like McHenry Row, which combines a place to live, shop, work, and play.
A large residential community with light retail: Port Covington presents the rare opportunity for a large new urban waterfront community. Design a majority residential space, but add light retail to include small stores and restaurants.
Port industries: The Port of Baltimore is soaring and an influx of cargo is expected to come with the completion of the Panama Canal Expansion. The site could be used as an additional port for cargo and cars, or as a second cruise terminal.
An entertainment destination: Ideas such as a soccer stadium, race track, arena, Seacrets Resort, and more have been floated around for this property. Would you like to see one of these come here or a combination of several?
A corporate headquarters: Port Covington presents a large amount of space that could be ideal for a large company looking for their own campus.
