House Catches Fire on East Heath Street

| February 26, 2013 | 0 Comments

At approximately 11am this morning, a house under renovation at 7 E. Heath St. caught fire towards the rear of the property.  A steady stream of black smoke exited the property and filled the air in the South Baltimore neighborhood. Two construction workers on the property exited out the front door and the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) was quickly on the scene.

The BCFD immediately began to spray down the fire and had it pretty well under control within about 10 minutes and fully extinguished within about 40 minutes. However, the fire caused some damage to the back exterior and fencing of 7 E. Heath. Exterior damage was also caused to adjacent properties 5 E. Heath, 9 E. Heath and 11 E. Heath.

The owners of 5 and 9 E. Heath were both contacted, immediately left work and came home.  Both were in good spirits and told SouthBMore.com that the damage was pretty minimal on the inside of their homes, though damage was caused on the rear exterior. Their second floor windows on the rear of the house would also need to be replaced as they were busted out by the BCFD.

Some siding melted off the exterior of 11 E. Heath, but there did not appear to be an damage on the opposite end of the street at 3 E. Heath.  Owners of these properties were not present at the scene.

No people or animals were injured in the incident.

In total the scene attracted two BCFD fire trucks, several police cars, a BCFD ambulance and a BCPD helicopter. Heath St. between Charles and Light was closed for more than an hour.

The cause of the fire was unknown at the scene, but neighbors familiar with the property were speculating that it could have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, a combustion from working on the gas line or a combustion of materials in a trash can in the back yard.  We will provide an update when more details are confirmed.
