Great Plates of Late in South Baltimore

Let’s take a look at some of the foods I’ve had recently that really stood out. And, please don’t hesitate to share some of your favorites!

More Soup for You!

It’s that time of year when the weather gets cold and the body breaks down, so you’ll probably be craving some soup soon. Here’s some of my favorites of late:

-Curry Lentil Soup from Koba Cafe:  Koba Cafe is the type of place that every great neighborhood needs – it’s friendly, fresh and local.  Next time you are in the mood for soup stop by this Fort Ave. cafe and try the curry lentil soup.  It’s delicious with a great blend of spices and fresh beans.  I’ve also sampled their new Tomato Basil and I will certainly be getting a whole bowl soon!

-Italian Wedding Soup from Trinacria:  We’ll extend into Downtown/Seton Hill for this one.  The Italian Wedding Soup from Trinacria is good enough to make those afraid of commitment think about marriage.  I’ve had a lot of wedding soups (Mom’s is delicious) in my years and  this is one of the best, plus it’s a large portion for just $2.50.  Next time you go there to get a sandwich, Italian food or wine, try their wedding soup… I’m sure you’ll get it again!

Japanese Burrito from Shoyou

I’ll admit, I didn’t go to Soho Eatery as often as I should have, but I have been a huge fan of the new Shoyou Sushi that took it’s place about a month ago.  I’ve had several good rolls there, but I’ve had to get the Japanese Burrito the last two trips.  It has spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, rice and avocado stuffed in soy paper and served with three sauces.  Their spicy tuna is some of the best I’ve ever had!  Try some of their garlic edamame on the side and bring your own bottle to drink.

Burger Time!

-5oz Black Angus Burger at Cockey’s: Cockey’s in Hollins Market has great food and their burger is one of the best deals around.  A delicious burger hot off the grill made the way you like for only $4.25.  They also offer the Burger and Natty Boh deal for just $4.95.  They call it the “Best Deal in Baltimore”… I’m not arguing!

-Bison Burger from the Hill: There are several good bison burgers around SoBo and The Hill’s is one of the best.  Fresh bison, BBQ sauce, bacon, grilled onions and blue cheese crumbles on a fresh croissant.  It’s very good! Make sure to stop by on Tuesday for their Burger Night specials.

Thai Shrimp from Porters

Don’t you hate it (love it) when you go into a restaurant and can’t decide what you want to get because everything sounds so good?  I had that problem last time I ate at Porters.  If you are in that same dilemma, I definitely recommend the Thai Shrimp appetizer. The shrimp come lightly breaded with sweet crust and are served with a  spicy Thai sauce.  It’s a great combination of sweet and spicy!

Shoyou is such a great addition to South Baltimore. Can’t say I went to Soho either, but I eat at Shoyou probably once a week.

Thank you! I’ll look for these restaurants. I like and work in the area and I’ve missed these places!

Beware getting carry out from Shoyou. I placed an order on a Monday night, and was told it would take 45min… no big deal. When I showed up, they informed me that it would be another 30 minutes which was a little upsetting. When I returned they said that they were running out of food and could not fill my order. Not an ideal first impression.
