Great Plates of Late Around South Baltimore
If your are looking to read up on all of the fine dining places to take your significant other for an anniversary, this won’t be the post for you. That being said, here are some great casual eats from around SoBo:
The Subs at Harris Teeter
With a lot of different places to get a quick sandwich, I never thought to try one at Harris Teeter before stopping there one time with a friend to pick up some snacks and drinks in preparation for a day out on the boat. I quickly learned that not only are these subs tasty, fresh and made to order, but one heck of a deal. They have many daily deals including select 6″ subs for $3.50 and 12″ subs on Fridays for $4.99.
A 6″ sub from Harris Teeter will definitely fill you up as the fresh baked sub rolls are piled with a generous portion of fresh sliced meats and toppings of your choice. I recommend the rare roast beef, which goes great on their wheat roll (…go on Fridays and get two meals out of your $4.99 sub!)
Cheap, tasty and filling – that’s a winning combo!
Slyce Steak at HomeSlyce
HomeSlyce’s pizza, wings, salads and calzones are so good that I often overlook their sandwiches. But, with their $5 sandwich special falling on Thursdays, I decided to try one of them out on my recent mid-week visit. The Slyce Steak recently received a great review in the Baltimore Sun, so that gave me another reason to venture from one of my tried-and-true favorites.
If you are looking for a traditional Philly cheesesteak, this is quite different, but nonetheless very tasty. On fresh baked ciabatta bread, you are immediately drawn to the great flavor of the steak accompanied by mozzarella, peppers, onions and your choice of LTM (Full disclosure: I held the mushrooms, which also come on it, but if you are a fan. I’m sure they also go well).
I now have a new problem, do I get pizza, wings, a calzone, an entree salad or the steak sandwich on my next visit? I look forward to dealing with that dilemma.
Harborview Wrap at Sorso Cafe
There are few more scenic settings than Harborview and anyone can get a feel of this fabulous community by stopping at places like Tiki Barge, Tabrizis and Sorso Cafe. Looking for an early lunch, I recently stopped at Sorso, a place that can solve your needs for coffee, sandwiches, desserts, packaged goods and more.
I went with the Harborview Wrap and it was very good. It had grilled chicken breast tossed in a pesto marinade and was served with fresh mozzarella and basil. The outside of the wrap was perfectly grilled and the pesto marinade was really unique, but still provided the same pesto flavor that people love.
I’ll definitely be back soon.
Breakfast at Big Matty’s Diner
I’m sure most people reading this have been to Big Matty’s Diner before, as have I, but my trip before the Ravens game last Sunday was extra impressive. With people constantly coming through the door, the diner operated like a well-oiled machine as patrons were seated at the tables and bar, fresh plates of breakfast were being delivered by the team of servers, and everyone seemed to leave full and with a smile.
I got the pancakes with two eggs and turkey bacon. It was tasty and way more food than I expected. I also got a couple bites of the sausage gravy with biscuits, which came with a sizable helping of home fries – also very good!
I don’t always have time for a good breakfast, but Big Matty’s is a great place to go for good food and a feel of old and new Baltimore all in one.
