The South Baltimore Little League 10-11 all-star team, that competes in the Minor League Baseball Division, won the District 4 Championship for the first time in 11 years this past weekend. They defeated Laurel 2-0 in a three-game series with 10-3 and 11-5 victories.

South Baltimore now heads to the double elimination Maryland State Little League tournament on July 22nd in Easton where they will compete for the state championship against eight other teams.

The team is coached by Tom Fortman who is a neighborhood resident, a former Digital Harbor High School coach, and the father of Keegan Fortman, a catcher for the South Baltimore 10-11 team. The last time South Baltimore won District 4, Fortman’s older son Tommy was on the team. Fortman has been involved with South Baltimore Little League for 30 years. The players celebrated the District Championship by dumping a cooler of water on Fortman.

Fortman told SouthBMore.com all 13 members of the team contributed in the series win and all of them attend Federal Hill Prep, Francis Scott Key, or Thomas Johnson. Jackson Dungee was the winning pitcher in Game 1, and Drew Webb got the save. Dungee also hit a home run in the second game.

William Walton pitched a complete game to get the win in Game 2. Fortman told SouthBMore.com that it was the first playoff complete game he has witnessed as there is an 85 pitch limit in the six-inning games. Andrew Webb led the team in hitting and defense, according to Fortman.

Fortman said the state tournament will be a huge step up in competition, but the team in confident. “It’s not only a great group of kids, but a great group of parents,” said Fortman. He noted that parents spent two hours getting the field ready for competition over the weekend following rain.

The 11-12 division, the Major League Baseball Division, competes for the Little League World Series. South Baltimore did not field a team this year, but will in the future.

The South Baltimore 9-10 all-star team took second place in District 4. The senior all-stars (13-16) will also compete in the state tournament.

Fortman told SouthBMore.com the number of players and the level of talent at South Baltimore Little League has increased in the last few years. Fortman, who will be moving to South Carolina with his family at the end of the summer, said, “To go out with this group of kids and parents is pretty special.”
