1701 Light Street Seized by State of Maryland
The property is a single rowhouse that also features a back shed, which was housing tenants as well. It is located at the corner of Heath St. and Light St. facing Thomas Johnson Elementary.
Efforts have been in place for more than 10 years to resolve the issues at the property, which has caused problems for the surrounding communities of Riverside and South Baltimore. In litigation since 2008, a judge decided to award the property to the State of Maryland after a violation of the agreement between the community and the property owner involving the housing of convicted criminals and the use of the back shed for housing.
The owner had been notified of the eviction, however, when officials from the State of Maryland, the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office and Baltimore City Police arrived at approximately 11am to change the locks, nine people, including the owner, were inside the property. All were removed, the locks were changed and ‘No Trespassing’ signs were placed on the exterior.
Update 9/12: The property will be available at an A.J. Billig & Co. auction on the premises of 1701 Light St. on October 4th at 11am.
Update 10/4: A crowd of more than 50 people attended the auction with approximately 5-10 groups bidding on the property. The property was sold for $152,000.
